Between 1980 and 1992, Ray was the Plumbing and Drainage Inspector, Building Inspector and Dangerous Goods Inspector for Hamilton City and Waikato District Councils.

In 1992, he established his own company, Haz-Tech Environmental Ltd, specialising in dangerous goods inspections, hazardous substances collections, repacking, identification and disposal of hazardous wastes as well as providing consultancy advice on the above. Ray counts a considerable number of regional, city and district councils as well as private companies among his clients.

In 1996 and 1997, Haz-Tech Environmental Ltd contracted to the NZ Consortium of Regional Councils to undertake major repacking of the large stockpile of unwanted agricultural chemicals these councils had amassed over a number of years. He subsequently managed the project of identifying, segregating and packing these chemicals to enable them to be shipped offshore for destruction. The total quantity of hazardous agricultural chemicals dealt with in this project was 130 tonnes, which made it the largest project of its kind ever to be undertaken in New Zealand.

In 1998, Ray became the Manager of Hazardous Waste Collections for Tredi NZ Ltd and was responsible for several major hazardous waste contracts with regional councils throughout New Zealand. During this time, he also worked on Réunion Island and the Cape Verde Islands to undertake the removal and shipment of hazardous agricultural chemicals.

In 2003, Ray returned to managing his own business, now joined by his son Scott who has rapidly become an asset to the company and follows in his father’s footsteps.
